Oporto, Portugal, 1618. The entire population was exhorted to denounce heresies under pain of excommunication. In a city where a large part of the population had Jewish ancestry, including more than one hundred Conversos were imprisoned, causing terror, mass emigration and the near total destruction of the city’s economy. Friction between Porto’s judicial authorities, which had always been on good terms with both Jews and New Christians, find themselves in an untenable situation. An inquisitorial visitation causes such strife that António Álvares decides to outline an escape plan.to travel to Spain to give King Philip II an account of the events transpiring.

Dara Jeffries is a dual-national that splits her time between the U.S. and Portugal. She has been a member of the Jewish Community of Oporto since she was a child and is now serves as Vice-President She is also a representative of the Community with respect to its cultural endeavors internationally and has spoken at International Film Festivals and conferences about the Community’s films, museums and educational programs. A practicing attorney, Dara holds a Masters in Languages from Oxford University, a Portuguese Law degree and a U.S. Law degree. Dara lives with her husband Dale, a retired musician and professor, and has two grown sons.
